It’s inspiring to see what people can accomplish and how much a home can be improved with some renovation. Here is a wonderful story of a couple who had an old piece of architectural history and took the opportunity to revitalize it back to life.
What does buying a Meier-designed home mean to you? When couple Michael McCarthy and Marcia Myers purchased the 1973 Douglas House by Richard Meier, they saw a lovely waterfront home that needed some rehabilitation after years of wear and tear. Unbeknownst to them, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier is famous in the architecture world for designing luxurious minimalist homes with a trademark all-white color palette. He is perhaps best known for being the mastermind behind the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art.
After buying the Douglas House in 2007, it wasn’t until 9 months later that they realized the architectural and historical significance of their purchase. Since then, McCarthy and Myers spent four years on a restoration process to return it to its original intent. They fixed water damage, reinforced the entrance bridge, removed and sandblasted the steel awning windows, replaced the home’s redwood siding, and even reupholstered a sofa that Meier designed for the living room.
With the work of McCarthy and Myers, the stunning home has been added to the USA’s National Register of Historic Places.
